About Ridgewater Energy
As a leader in the energy efficiency field, Ridgewater Energy have over 5 decades of combined experience working in this sector in the South West, with a focus on Dorset.
From their HQ in Wimborne, they design, develop and deliver fuel poverty projects and act as consultants to local authorities, installers, landlords and letting agents. In addition, they also advise householders on energy saving opportunities in their homes, with a focus on assisting those with limited means and in poor health to enable cost-effective, comfortable living. With a focus on cutting carbon emissions and reducing their own environmental impact, they are similarly assisting others through field-based services delivering energy and condensation advice and related installation services.

"We have a long relationship with Innovate both at Ridgewater and through a previous business, so we have a good long-term relationship, and we value the work they do for us and feel valued as a client too. They take the time to explain any issues, but also to check in with us, and offer really worthwhile and considered solutions with security, advances in technology and our needs in mind. They deliver consistently, in terms of day-to-day support, in meeting any bespoke needs we might have for the business and recommending up to date solutions, including ones we hadn’t considered. Most importantly they are very professional, knowledgeable, can relay complex information in simple language and friendly and good humoured, too!"

The Challenges
Prior to starting the project, Innovate were already providing day-to-day IT support to Ridgewater Energy as well as looking after their cloud environment.
Ridgewater were looking for a way to support their efforts to turn into a modern workspace, which meant relying less on external technologies. This boost of self-sufficiency was an effort to reduce downtime and increase the security of their entire environment including endpoints.
The Solution
Moving users from VDI machines to Microsoft 365
VDI had become a constraint rather than an enabler. Because every desktop ran in an externally hosted environment, day-to-day performance depended on connection quality, and a single outage at the host took the entire workforce offline at once — a material risk for staff working in the field. The environment was also expensive to run and awkward to patch and secure consistently. Moving users onto Microsoft 365 put applications and data on managed devices the business controls directly: staff work locally without the latency penalty, and every endpoint can be hardened, patched and monitored centrally through Microsoft's own security tooling. The external dependency, and the single point of failure that came with it, were removed together.
Migrating data storage from on-site file server to the cloud to ensure robustness
The on-site file server was a comparable weak point. Every file the business relied on sat on a single box in one building, so that the hardware's age, its backup regime and the site's power and connectivity all became shared points of failure — and staff working remotely or in the field needed a VPN to reach anything, which slowed them down and added another moving part to support. Migrating storage to the cloud spread that risk: data is replicated and versioned rather than tied to one piece of ageing kit, files are reachable directly from wherever people are working, and access can be governed file by file with leak protection applied centrally instead of relying on the perimeter.
Adding Defender, Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, Mimecast, and Huntress 24/7 SOC coverage
Security was the thinnest layer of the estate. Endpoint protection offered little visibility across the fleet, email - still the most common way in for phishing and invoice fraud - was largely unscreened, and nobody was watching alerts outside office hours, so anything that landed overnight or at a weekend sat unanswered until someone logged on. The new stack closes each gap in turn: Defender and Defender for Endpoint give detection and response across every machine with central telemetry, Mimecast filters email before it reaches a user, and Huntress adds a 24/7 SOC, so alerts are triaged by people rather than left queued. A small internal team gets round-the-clock cover without having to staff it.
Hardening endpoints and enforcing patching and device compliance
A security stack is only as good as the state of the machines underneath it. Patching had been inconsistent, device configuration varied from one user to the next, and there was no reliable way to show which machines met the agreed baseline — leaving a security gap and an audit gap at the same time. Devices are now governed by central policy: updates are enforced rather than left to the user, configuration is hardened to an agreed standard, and only known, compliant machines are permitted to reach company data, so it cannot be leaked or moved. Anything that drifts out of compliance is flagged and remediated, ensuring ongoing protection.
The Innovate Difference
The project was carried out in 92 working hours – five weeks, including testing. It was split into four phases:
-
Discovery – Innovate met with Ridgewater to assess the current environment and where to get it, including setting out the steps with an agreed timeline.
-
Tenant build – pilot users were testing the environment.
-
Data migration – carried out across two weeks to ensure everything is GDPR compliant and pilot users had the appropriate security levels.
-
Remainder of the fleet was moved over and updated.
The Project Management Aspect
Throughout the project, communications with the project champions were crucial, with a regular catchup after every change that was made. It was clearly communicated which changes should be seen, with the project champions confirming that this was the case.
A Ridgewater pilot user allowed Innovate to get instant feedback and put remediation in place. Weekly communications and regular catch-up meetings when a new phase was about to kick off ensured accountability and that the project stayed on track and met expectations at any stage.
“There was a really clear plan from Gwynne and Damian about how the project would be set up and deployed, and it felt like we had control of how and when the various stages were rolled out, which was reassuring.”
Peter Bywater, Ridgewater Energy
“My team is working more consistently, not stressing about downtime, productivity is up, accessing home and work files is easy and joined up, we can now use AI more often and more effectively and office harmony generally improved as a result!”

Outcomes
Ridgewater Energy have now a 24/7 monitored and protected ecosystem including hardened endpoints to minimise the risk of a cyber attack.
Any environmental issues (like the internet going down) which would previously stop users from doing their work will now not affect them, meaning Ridgewater Energy have gained more self-sufficiency.
Since the project has finished, Innovate have seen a reduction in support tickets by 53%.
Key Takeaways
Challenges
- Externally hosted VDI – connection-dependent, single point of failure, costly to run
- Ageing on-site file server – VPN needed for remote access
- Limited endpoint visibility, unscreened email, no out-of-hours monitoring
- Inconsistent patching and device configuration
How Innovate Solved Them
- Users moved from VDI to Microsoft 365 on centrally managed devices
- Data storage migrated to the cloud
- Defender, Defender for Endpoint, Mimecast and Huntress 24/7 SOC deployed
- Endpoints hardened; patching and compliance enforced
- 92-hour, four-phase project with pilot users and project champions
Business Outcomes
-
Stable, dropout-free working; faster log-ins; stable Teams; ~£350/month saved
-
Safe file access from home and work; no downtime from local outages
-
24/7 monitoring and protection
- Reduced cyber attack risk; ongoing compliance
- 53% fewer support tickets; ~£500 saved in downtime; ready for CoPilot and AI
- Overall: less downtime, less external reliance, stronger security
What's Next
With this project, Ridgewater is now in the perfect place to begin leveraging new technologies to streamline and optimise their business moving forwards, such as CoPilot and other AI solutions to enable them in the future.
“We are nearing completion of our own bespoke CRM system which will streamline our data collection and will look to utilise AI in the business, beyond just using it as a search tool and humorous cartoon creator, to be a more powerful business tool for data and project analysis and reporting.”
